Sunday Update:

Hello Families!

I hope everyone had a great weekend!  I we will be watching my Redskins and eating chili in just a few minutes...life is good!

I apologize for not giving you an academic update last week.  It got away from me with all the excitement of the week. A few reminders and celebrations...

  • Tomorrow we have a library book exchange. Please send your students to school with their library book.
  • We are all excited for a 5 day week and a regular schedule!!!!!!!
  • Celebration....term 2 begins on Monday.  Time flies when you are having fun!  I am so impressed with all students' social, emotional, and academic growth.  My class continues to amaze me each and every day.
  • The students and I have worked together to make Hero Slip Reward Menu.  Students will now be able to turn in their Hero Slips for a reward.  If the students earn a reward, I will write what they pick in their folder:
    • Prize Box = 10
    • Show and Tell = 12
    • Slippers in the classroom for a day = 20
    • Pick your own seat for a day = 25
    • Special seat for a day = 30
    • Lunch with your teacher = 35
    • Hat day = 40
  • A big thank you for the Harvest Party donations!!
  • Another big thanks to the parents that came to help set up and run stations!
  • Celebration....the evening Harvest Party was a huge success.  Thank you for coming out and supporting Whittier!  We have such a fabulous community.
  • This winter all kindergarten classrooms are going to do a S.T.E.M. (science, technology, engineering and math) project on birds.  We are going to learn about birds and design and build a bird house out of recycled materials.  We will also make bird feeders using pine cones.  I have enough for my class...but, if you come across pine cones in your travels, please collect them for K classes.  Thanks!
This week.....

  • The Three Billy Goats Fluff by: Rachael Mortimer
  • The Day Jimmy Boa Ate The Wash by: Trinka Hakes Noble
  • Mossy by:Jan Brett
Science:

Our class will have science with Ms. House this week!  They just LOVE science.  They will explore Matter through their senses.  What does an object feel like? Sound like? Smell like? Look like?

Ask your students to name the five senses.
Pick an object in your home and ask your student to explore it using their senses.

Writing:

  • Students will continue to work on their small moment book.
  • We are focusing on using a small moment and stretching it out on three pages using details.
  • The students are adding labels, speech bubbles and details to their illustrations.
  • They will share their books later this week.
  • On Thursday, we will review the lesson "stretching out and writing words"  What can you do if you don't know how to spell a word.  Use your sounds...what is the first sound you hear...what do you hear next?
  • Our motto of the week...everyone's writing is going to look different, so we are not going to tell each other how to spell words.
Math:

  • How can we compare objects to see which is longer/shorter?
  • How can we compare the height of children?
  • We will use comparative vocabulary to compare various math manipulatives.
  • We will explore 2D shapes.
  • We will identify 2D shapes in the environment.
  • We will use geoboards to make shapes.
  • Shapes all around us!  We will tour the school to look for shapes.
  • We will sort objects in shape categories.
  • We will explore shape attributes: points, sides, curved, straight line.
  • We will make shapes using play-dough!!

I hope everyone has a fabulous week!  Now, I must give my full attention to the Redskins!!
