Sunday Update

Hi Families,

I hope everyone has enjoyed this wonderful fall weather.  I took a long walk in Baker Park and Downtown...it was beautiful!

Please see the pictures I added below.  The students really enjoyed the center room.  We will attend the center room again this week on a week B schedule.

In our writing literacy station (in the classroom) students are going to write letters.  You may see letters coming home in their backpacks.  Writing center was previously used to explore many different writing materials.  Students will now have a specific task when they attend the station.  I think they will be very excited about this! If you have extra envelopes/stickers that would resemble stamps...please send them in!

Tomorrow is library day...please don't forget to send books to school!

This week.....

Morning Meeting:

Sight words: Come it do

Poems:

Two Little Blackbirds
If I Were a Bird

Whole Group:

We are going to read about Hibernation.  We will create a KWL (know, want to know, learned) chart as a class.  We will read two fiction stories to activate students' prior knowledge and get them wondering and asking questions about hibernation and the animals that hibernate.

  • We will record what we already know about hibernation.
Bear Snores On
Hibernation Station

  • Students will write questions on sticky notes and place them in the want to know section.

We will recall details from nonfiction books about hibernation and animals that hibernate.  We add the information to the LEARNED section.

Ask your student to name animals that hibernate.  Ask...Why do animals hibernate?

Science:

Students will continue to learn more about the 5 senses and how they can help you during observation.  Students will taste foods that have a distinctly different taste.

Students will participate in a sink or float experiment.  The essential question for this lesson is...How does the material something is made out of, tell you if it will sink or float?
Students will make predictions and discuss and compare results.

Writing:

We will continue to work on our If I Lived in a Pumpkin writing.  The students are coming up with some very creative ideas!

Later in the week...we will practice stretching out and writing words for a small moment story that I will tell.  Students will us white boards to help me stretch sounds and write the corresponding letter.

We will also do a lesson on sketching rather than drawing.  The students will practice sketching a story. We will discuss how planning details in your writing is important.  I will model my planning and the students will practice this.

Math:

K.MD.A.1 Describe measurable attributes of objects, such as length or weight. Describe several measurable attributes of a single object.

  • Measure objects in the classroom using cubes
  • Trace our feet and measure them using many math tools (connecting cubes, bears, dominos, etc). this will become a math center game
  • Explore balances
  • Measure objects by weight
  • Vocabulary: long, longest, short, shortest...etc.
Have a great week!  Any questions, just ask!
