Sunday Post

Hi Families,

I hope everyone had a super Saturday!  The weather was beautiful!  We walked around downtown. Lets just hope we don't get the snow they are calling for on Tuesday.

Dates to remember for this week....
  • We have a library lesson tomorrow
  • Friday is a 2 hour early dismissal
  • Friday is our class picture (We usually do them by the lake, hopefully we will do that again.  Weather permitting!)
  • The school play (Wizard of Oz) is Friday, April 4th and Saturday, April 5th
  • Please return the permission slip indicating whether or not you would like your student to participate in our Warm Fuzzy reward, Dunkin Donuts!!!!
This week in Kindergarten...

Poem -

Sherry Shepard - we are working on the sh- digraph.  Last week we worked on the ch- digraph

Reading - we will make, confirm and modify predictions using details from the text.  You can practice these skills at home using a new/unfamiliar book.  We will also look at how photographs and illustrations contribute to understanding a text.

Writing -

We have discussed "how to" books and read a couple of books that teach how to do/make something.  Examples, Peanuts to Peanut butter, Seed to flower, How to make cookies.  On Friday, we made a Kite using a paper cut out and streamers.  We decorated the kite with sight words.  We wrote the steps we would take to make the kite..

1. write words
2. color
3. cut
4. glue

The students wrote the steps and then followed the steps to create the kite.  This week students will write a "how to make a kite" book and share them with another class.

Math -

We are working on solving addition and subtraction story problems using several different strategies...

  • Represent: display addition or subtraction processes using concrete materials, pictures, numbers, words, or acting it out.
  • Part-part-whole Mat: a mat used to organize concrete materials to make sense of a problem.
  • Counting All: the very first addition counting strategy in which a student counts all of the objects, pictures, or items in a problem to determine the total and solve the problem. This is the least efficient counting strategy to use and should lead to the more efficient Counting On strategies.
  • Counting On: an addition counting strategy in which a student starts with one set of objects and counts up to solve the problem.
  • Counting Up: a subtraction counting strategy in which a student counts up from one part to the whole in order to find the missing part.
  • Counting Back: a subtraction counting strategy in which a student counts back from the total in order to find the missing part.

The highlight of the week will be subtraction bowling, using dixie cups and tennis balls!!

I have to share these pictures....I love the MUSTACHE photos...such a fun week!

Whacky Wednesday!!
