Happy Memorial Day!

Hi Families,

I hope everyone had a fabulous Memorial Day weekend!  Emma took her first swim.  It was very funny.  Turns out, she can doggie paddle just like any other dog...I guess size doesn't matter!

Ok....Maybe she looks a little scared lol

A few announcements about this week:

  • All library books need to be returned this week - we will not see Ms. Datoli for another library lesson
  • Talent show tryouts will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday
  • FRIDAY - CARNIVAL NIGHT!  Come out and enjoy snack and games.  I will be there!  As a class, we have learned how to play our game....I will need some "helpers"  to work the ring toss
  • Last week I sent home a letter about an ice cream social on the last day of school.  Please return the form so we know how many ice cream cones are needed.  Please bring family members!  The more the merrier!!  It is an after school function, so you will need to stay at the park with your child.  Thanks!!
I will add photos from field day later this week.  I hope everyone has a super week!

A preview of the FIELD DAY FUN!

Summer Reading List!

If you would like book recommendations, Ms. Datoli gave us some summer reading ideas to share with our families.  Check out the books that she recommends!

Also, ALL student library books are due tomorrow.  If you can have them back to school by Tuesday at the latest, that would be great!

Hello Parents & Students,
We are getting close to the end of our school year and you know what that means… time to look for your library books! All student library books are due by Friday, May 23rd! Please help your child locate their library book(s) and return their book(s) by May 23rd. If your child’s book is lost or damaged, please send me a note, call me at 240-236-3114 or email me at christina.dattoli@fcps.org. Thank you very much for the privileged opportunity to work with your children. We have had an exciting year in the library media center! Have a great summer and be sure to READ! Research shows that if students read at least 4 books during the summer, it will prevent the “summer slide” and they will be ready for fall.  If you need some suggestions for summer reading, be sure to check out the Library Media webpage on our school’s website: http://education.fcps.org/whes/media_summerreading.

Ooopppss!

I'm sorry, the concert on Wednesday is at 2:45 pm.  4th grade will perform at 2:00 pm.  Thanks to the parents that brought this to my attention.

On a side note...last year, I had an ice cream party at Meadows with my students on the last day of school.  Since Meadows is no longer open, I would like to have an ice cream celebration at the Cobblestone Park at 4 pm, on June 11th.  Ms.  House's class will also meet with us.  I will send a letter home in Thursday folders!

Come out and support Education!

Dear Parents-
Did you know that Frederick County ranks in 8th in MD for wealth, but 19th out of 24 in per pupil spending.  And that spending by the county has been flat for the last 5 years, despite increased numbers of UNFUNDED mandates coming from the state and national levels?  How are we suppose to provide a quality education for our children without the funds that our county commissioners feel that we can do without?
The Board of County Commissioners will hold a hearing with time for public comment at Oakdale High School tonight, May 6th at 6pm regarding the upcoming budget.  The BoCC is highly unlikely to fully fund the proposed budget unless community members show up in LARGE numbers to show that education needs to be their priority.  If you can't make the meeting, please contact them via email or phone to tell them that you are a constituent who will not support their reelection if they cannot commit to giving your children a quality education.
The bare minimum allowed by law is not okay for my child's education and tonight's meeting is important.  I've never been to one of these hearings, but I know FCPS needs your support now more than ever.

This is a link to a youtube video by Dr. Alban on why tonight is so important.  Check it out and please consider coming out to support our education system.
Thanks for your support!  Please forward this to any parents you know.  As parents, we need to stand together to support our children!
