Ooopppss!

I'm sorry, the concert on Wednesday is at 2:45 pm.  4th grade will perform at 2:00 pm.  Thanks to the parents that brought this to my attention.

On a side note...last year, I had an ice cream party at Meadows with my students on the last day of school.  Since Meadows is no longer open, I would like to have an ice cream celebration at the Cobblestone Park at 4 pm, on June 11th.  Ms.  House's class will also meet with us.  I will send a letter home in Thursday folders!

Come out and support Education!

Dear Parents-
Did you know that Frederick County ranks in 8th in MD for wealth, but 19th out of 24 in per pupil spending.  And that spending by the county has been flat for the last 5 years, despite increased numbers of UNFUNDED mandates coming from the state and national levels?  How are we suppose to provide a quality education for our children without the funds that our county commissioners feel that we can do without?
The Board of County Commissioners will hold a hearing with time for public comment at Oakdale High School tonight, May 6th at 6pm regarding the upcoming budget.  The BoCC is highly unlikely to fully fund the proposed budget unless community members show up in LARGE numbers to show that education needs to be their priority.  If you can't make the meeting, please contact them via email or phone to tell them that you are a constituent who will not support their reelection if they cannot commit to giving your children a quality education.
The bare minimum allowed by law is not okay for my child's education and tonight's meeting is important.  I've never been to one of these hearings, but I know FCPS needs your support now more than ever.

This is a link to a youtube video by Dr. Alban on why tonight is so important.  Check it out and please consider coming out to support our education system.
Thanks for your support!  Please forward this to any parents you know.  As parents, we need to stand together to support our children!

Sunday Post

Hello!

Now that the weather is warmer and the weekends are busier...it is getting harder and harder to keep up with my blog posts.  I apologize!!  I hope everyone had a nice weekend.

Things to know....

  • We have a library lesson on Monday
  • We planted sunflower seeds on Friday (each child is keeping a plant journal and documenting growth each morning)
  • We have a field trip scheduled for Monday, May 12.  It is a half day field trip to Fountain Rock Park and Nature Center, in Walkersville.  If you are interested in volunteering please contact me.  Information is coming home this week!!
  • Friday we have a book fair preview (the BoGo book fair begins Friday after school)
  • We have a lesson with our enrichment specialist on Friday morning.

Word Study Goals -

RF.2c- Orally blend word parts (onsets and rimes)
RF2. e- Orally delete a sound (phoneme) at the end of a simple, one-syllable words to make a new word.
RF3.b- recognize that a single vowel letter stands for a short or long vowel sound

Questions: How can word families help us read/write words.

Try some of these activities at home....

-do some oral word play with your kiddos based on familiar word families. Ex.
  • Say ring;
  • change the /r/ to /p/; what’s the word? ping
  • change the /p/ to /s/- What’s the word? sing
  • change the /s/ to /th/, what’s the word? thing

-You can also change the word family (rime) and/or the beginning part of the word (onset)
  • - say ring;
  • change /ing/ to /at/- What’s the word? rat
  • change /at/ to ug- what’s the word? rug;
  • change /r/ to /b/ what’s the word? bug

  • Say dog;
  • change the /d/ to /l/; what’s the word? log
  • add b to the beginning of log; what’s the word? blog
  • change the /bl/ to /fr/- What’s the word? frog
  • Bonus: take away the /r/ in frog what’s the word? fog

-You can also change the word family (rime) and/or the beginning part of the word (onset)
  • - say hop;
  • change /op/ to /am/- What’s the word? ham
  • change /am/ to /ip/- what’s the word? hip;
  • change /h/ to /s/ what’s the word? sip
  • change /s/ to /tr/ what’s the word? trip

We will continue to review all sight words!

This week in reading, we will compare character traits/experiences in similar fairy tales.

We will also work on writing our own fairy tales!

Teaching me how to solve addition story problems using a rekenrek!!

We planted jelly beans in sugar before spring break...and they grew into lollipops!

Beautiful Sunday...

Hi everyone!

What a beautiful weekend we've had.  I need to share these funny pictures of Emma.  Today we spent the morning judging cross country horse trials.  We were allowed to bring Emma and she seemed to think that it was fun to watch/chase the horses.

That girl sure is brave!!!

I apologize for not posting last week...I had planned to do so on Monday evening and it got away from me.  A few reminders for this week...

-We will extend our homework for the 3 day week
-We have library book exchange tomorrow
-Monday will have a book mark decorating contest (each student's book mark is sent to the library and the winning book marks are copied and distributed - have your student think about their favorite book, and how they would like to promote the book)
-Tuesday is dress as your favorite book character - last year I was  Pinkalicious...this year the K team is dressing up together!
-Wednesday is our CiCi's pizza party during lunch time
-Thank you to all of the families that attend our CiCi's fundraiser!
-Please return your student's permission slip before Tuesday so they can enjoy pizza!

We started our Friday lunch bunch this week.  I eat lunch with 5 students in the classroom.  It is so nice to talk about the things they like to do outside of school.  We also talk about what they would like to learn about in the remaining months of kindergarten...dinosaurs...how to bake cookies...etc....lol.  We don't have enough time to just...TALK!!  Every student will have a turn to eat lunch with me!

Just a reminder, in case you have forgotten...we have 3 day week.  I hope everyone has a great spring break!

This week...

Word Study - We are introducing word families.  We will find word family words (-ug, bug, rug, -en, -at, ip, etc) in text (books/poetry).  Students will also have independent practice with word families during centers.

Sight Words - that, the (review)

Reading - We will continue with close reading.  We are currently reading Memoirs of a Goldfish, and we will read Petunia this week.

Science - We studied the season last week.  This week we are looking into weather.  The students have created their own weather folder.  We will track the weather over the next 12 days.  We will review our 5 senses and discuss how we experience the weather through our senses.

Writing - Last week we researched a few different animals and recorded key details.  This week, students will choose one of those animals and write a report.

Math - We will review 2D and 3D shapes and positional words.

I hope you enjoy these photos.  Community helper day was a success.  We loved learning about different jobs in the community.  Oh, and the kiddos LOVED the goodies.

One of our reading groups performed a readers theatre for the class....props and everything.  This is something I would like to do with all groups before the end of the year.

You should have received your student's report card in their take-home folder on Friday.  If you have any questions regarding the report card, please let me know.  I cannot believe it is quarter 4.  Time flies when you're having fun.  Have a super week!
